Is A Course In Miracles For You?

Is a Course In Miracles for you?

We have, within us, multiple intelligences, all of which can mature and evolve over time. By far the most important line of intelligence available to us is the one that we ignore, or are in ignorance of, or that conventional religion made us turn away from: our spiritual intelligence.

If you are instinctively drawn to explore your spiritual intelligence and are wondering if A Course in Miracles might be the right path for you, ask yourself the questions below. Adopt an inward gaze and give yourself a little space to really contemplate the questions raised – go behind the words. Don’t rattle through the questions as if this were a test or a quiz. Slowly read each item on the list, close your eyes and allow the answer to be delivered by your whole body and not just your thinking mind:

  • Have you ever felt that there is something distinctly odd about this world? Maybe a vague but persistent awareness, somewhere deep in your subconscious, that this world you seem to inhabit is not your real home?

  • Do you feel that, no matter how much ‘success’ you have achieved in worldly terms, there is still an empty feeling inside, a realization that nothing and no one provides the deep peace and happiness that is the call of your soul?

  • Have you suffered enough yet to finally conclude that there has got to be a better way to live?

  • Are you able to put aside your beliefs, lay down your defenses and, with a truly open mind, contemplate ideas that will turn your worldview upside down? Would you rather be right or would you rather be happy?

  • Are you tired of being ruled by fearful thoughts, by a mind that is out of your control, addicted to the voice in your head that pulls you constantly out of the present moment of your life and into the imaginary world of the past and the future?

  • Are you willing to accommodate the idea that there is another mind in you, one that you have covered over and obscured with your own, concocted monkey mind, a Big Mind that is infinitely greater than your own little ego self?

  • Do you feel the tiny spark of light within you, like a dimly remembered connection to your Source, an intuition that you are more than a manufactured, personality self?

  • Do you really want the Love of God, the peace that passes all understanding?  Are you willing to allow your mind to be completely unwound so that the light within you outshines the darkness of the fearful ego thought system?

  • Can you be still and receive?

Be honest with yourself. If, for example, you would rather be right than happy, then hanging onto your belief systems is important for you at this stage of your life. If forgiving feels like too much of a stretch, or you are not willing to make room for silence and stillness, that’s fine, but these all mean that ACIM isn’t for you.

If, on the other hand, there is a little pilot light within that gets lit by the implications of these questions, if there’s a stirring of excitement at the prospect of finding a better way to live, of handing over all control to the power of the Holy Spirit in you, then maybe this is your way Home, home to Oneness.  Maybe you sense at some level that all your suffering is caused by a mind that thinks it is separate and alone, that needs to control and manipulate events. Maybe you feel the pull of your soul to be reunited with the Love from which you were sourced. The Source is what we can call God, or Love, or the Oneness of all things.

It doesn’t really matter what we call it because the Love that we are pointing to is beyond all conceptual understanding. Words are inherently dualistic but they’re hard to avoid when writing about this non-dual teaching. That is why you were invited in the beginning to bring the energy and attention of all of your Being to meditate on these questions. If they resonate in deep dimensions within you, A Course in Miracles could be your key to ultimate freedom. This is the freedom from identifying as a puny little ego self to stand in your real power and reclaim your home in God, the real Self that you never really left.

Who Do You Think You Are?

Who Do You Think You Are?

Do you take who you are to be self-evident? Have you simply swallowed whole the story of who you are without ever being invited to question it?

You Are Not Who You Think You Are

ACIM is a psycho-spiritual technology that invites you to question every single belief until it unwinds them all from our mind. We come to the realization that who we truly are is not a ‘thing’: not a voice in the head nor a story, (a history), not what our culture has conditioned us to believe we are. This is the biggest Aha moment of all, when we awaken to our true nature as no different from the Source of all creation. What we call ‘Life’ is never the same after.

The World is an Illusion

The sole reason for our suffering rests on an illusion, a gigantic case of mistaken identity. The illusion was created when we found ourselves in a state of separation – seeing ourselves as separate and distinct  from other people and other things in the world. This sense of being a skin-bound individual is referred to as the ego. It’s the false self. It’s as if the filament of light that is our Being grabbed itself a few fine threads and knitted itself into a little knot that I now call “me”. I am separate and alone, living in fear of the big bad world and what it might do to me. The ego has now drawn blackout blinds across the Truth of Life. We now misidentify as the voice in our heads, the constant commentary that dictates our life. This voice loves to judge, criticize and condemn. It loves to lure us into thinking that it has our best interests at heart. Nothing could be further from the truth. It’s whole apparent existence depends on hiding the truth from you. To awaken to Truth spells the end of its reign of terror. Could There Be Anything More Important to Know Than This?

What could be more important than finding out the Truth of who you are?

If you’ve ever wondered “What the hell am I doing here?’ (the here being this world), might this be the answer? Could it be that your life’s purpose is precisely this – to be a light unto the world? When you awaken, you never do so alone. So finding our way Home to God, returning to Source energy heals not only us, but brings healing light to the whole planet.

There IS another intelligence within you

There is another source of intelligence within you, one that has been obscured It invites you to tear up your map of the world and relax. There is every reason to relax and become radically calm. For, as you gradually awaken to your true identity, fear becomes impossible, laughable even. As we allow another mind to take charge of our lives, our lives change before our very eyes as we sink into the “peace that passeth all understanding”.

The Psychology of A Course in Miracles

The beauty of A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is that it’s a PSYCHO-spiritual teaching. It is as much radically life-changing psychology as it is spiritual path. It wakes you up to the truth of your own mind, your innermost world of thoughts, beliefs, feelings and desires. You see that this mind is a construction of your ego, your false self. What ACIM has to say about the ego is not pretty, but its assertions are universally applicable to all of us whether we are consciously seeking a spiritual path or not.

The psychology of ACIM cannot be separated from its spiritual message but even if you are not persuaded about the existence of God or the presence of Oneness, you can transform your life by applying its teachings.

If you don’t like the term ‘God’ substitute it for Love; they are both the same.

As you will see over the course of these articles, ACIM’s psychology is radically different. By radical, I mean it takes conventional thinking and turns it on its head. You will come to appreciate this as you work with the Course’s guidance. It will confront every one of your precious pre-conceived notions. You will be presented with the reasons why the world’s thinking is upside down and backwards. And if you practice its teachings, doing the opposite of what convention would advise, you will see your life blossom and unfold.

The psychology of Jesus is another way to describe ACIM since his was the voice that was heard in the transcribing of the Course. He tells us that there are only two fundamental emotions: Love and fear. We suffer because we have allowed ourselves to be hijacked by our tiny little ego mind. We identify as this false self whose job it is to blind us to the Light.

The only way to return to Love is to expose this ego mind, and this the Course does brilliantly. It deconstructs the ego with a clarity offered by no other psychology. It guides you to self-awareness so very gently yet powerfully. Gently in that we treat ourselves as the innocent child of Love that we are as we become more self-aware, and powerfully because we unwind the mind that caused so much sin, guilt and fear in the first place.

Jesus’s methodology rests on forgiveness. Through practicing forgiveness we come to heal our mind and switch our centre of identity from fear to Love.

This series of articles highlights the main elements of the psychology of ACIM. If you are serious about personal development, you will learn to coach yourself in these principles. Your most important relationship is the one you have with your self, and what you take that to be. ACIM teaches you everything you need to know about this relationship and how to transform it.

All it takes is a little willingness to open up and experiment with what is recommended. If you’re ready for Love, read on…

AHA! Is this the Real Meaning of Christmas?

The meaning you make of Christmas is likely based on your religious ‘education’. But if you’d had a spiritual upbringing, you might understand it radically differently. For example:

If you followed the teachings of A Course in Miracles, you would learn that:

The miracle of Christmas is the miracle of personal transformation.

There is only ONE son of God, and we are all it.

The birth of Jesus is the moment of now.

The Miracle of Christmas is the Miracle of Personal Transformation

The birth of Christ symbolises the realization (making real in your own experience) of a higher consciousness in you. It is not an external event, but an intimately personal insight into the truth of your being as an extension of God’s Love. (Fill in whatever word you like for God: love, source, presence, pure awareness, the ground of all Being – they all point to the same thing).

An angel is a thought from God. Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and told that God himself would impregnate her and she would carry his seed. Mary represents the human soul. God archetypically is masculine and the soul is feminine, representing the earth. So Mary opens to receive, surrenders her soul to this penetration by spirit, and out of this, Christ on earth is co-created. So Christ is not male or female but a consciousness that is fathered by God and mothered by humanity.

When we follow this lead by personally opening to spirit, to co-creating with God and receiving this state of consciousness, we transform our lives; we know ourselves as the human actualized as the divine; we are the embodiment of Love.

There is only ONE of us

The sign of Christmas is a star, a light in darkness. We live in darkness because we see an illusion, an illusion of being separate and alone. Our bodies’ eyes may see other bodies but in truth there is only Oneness. The light of Christmas is the light that comes down from the higher mind and penetrates the darkness, lifts the veil of ego and reveals the Truth of this.

Christmas is a time to see that God gives us the same opportunity he gave to Mary. God wants to work a miracle in you so that God’s son is born in you. There was only one begotten son and we are all it. When the son is born in us, we transform our consciousness. With the Christ in us, new energies come about, energies that help to heal the sick in us, to raise the dead in us.

The birth of Jesus is the moment of now.

We are never in the present moment when we are in our ego minds. The fearful ego mind  is precisely what prevents us from birthing Jesus in our consciousness. If we shut down our hearts and attend to these fearful thoughts, it is we who are saying “There is no room at the inn”. But if we place attention instead on opening our hearts, we invite Christ consciousness to be born in us. Surrendering our hearts to the higher wisdom is offering a manger in which Jesus, the spirit of Love can be born. The joy of Christmas is knowing ourselves as Love in that moment. Not a moment in time because time is an ego invention, but a moment that cuts through time to reveal eternity.

It is possible to live in such a way that we give birth to Love in every moment. If we do, we will have transformed lives, and not just our own life.

Merry Christmas mighty companions!
